Life Expectancy Calculator for Planning
The short answer: enter your age and sex to see how many years people like you live on average, and the chance of reaching 85, 90 or 95.
Planning for a longer horizon
On average, a female aged 65 in the U.S. lives about 20.7 more years — to around age 86.
Many people outlive the “average” — that’s why planners often build budgets to age 90 or 95.

How this is calculated
We use the Social Security Administration’s Period Life Table, 2023, the table used in the 2026 Trustees Report. “Remaining years” is the table’s life expectancy at your age. The chance of reaching an age multiplies the yearly survival rate (1 minus the chance of dying that year) for each year in between.
A period table describes mortality in one year. Because health care keeps improving, many people will live a bit longer than these numbers show. Health and smoking answers add context only; we do not change the numbers with made-up adjustments.
