Math: $500,000 ÷ 26.5 ≈ $18,868
This is an educational estimate — not a tax form and not an official IRS determination. Your plan administrator or IRA custodian calculates the official amount.
Deadlines & penalties (plain English)
For most people who have already reached RMD age, each year's RMD is due by December 31. The first RMD can be delayed until April 1 of the following year (taking two in that year).
Under SECURE 2.0, the excise tax for missing an RMD is generally 25% of the amount not withdrawn (can be 10% if corrected in time). This is not the old 50% rule. Confirm with IRS Pub 590-B or a tax professional.

Frequently asked questions
When do RMDs start under SECURE 2.0?
If you were born 1951–1959, RMDs generally begin at age 73. If you were born in 1960 or later, they begin at age 75. People born in 1950 or earlier followed the prior age-72 rule.
Can I delay my first RMD until April 1?
Yes — your first RMD can usually wait until April 1 of the year after you reach RMD age. If you do that, you must also take the next year’s RMD by December 31 of that same year (two withdrawals in one calendar year).
What is the penalty if I miss an RMD?
Under SECURE 2.0 the excise tax is generally 25% of the amount not taken (sometimes reduced to 10% if corrected promptly). It is no longer the old 50% penalty. See IRS Pub 590-B.
Do Roth IRAs have RMDs?
Roth IRAs do not require RMDs during the original owner’s lifetime. Beneficiaries may still have distribution rules. Roth 401(k) rules changed under SECURE 2.0 — check your plan.
I have several IRAs — how do I calculate?
For traditional IRAs, you may calculate an RMD for each IRA and then take the total from one or more IRAs. Workplace plans (401(k), etc.) generally require the RMD from each plan separately.
Does this tool tell me when I should claim Social Security?
No. It only compares estimated amounts at 62, full retirement age, and 70. The “right” age depends on health, work, taxes, and family benefits. Confirm figures at SSA.gov and talk with a qualified advisor if needed.
