Assisted Living Cost in Florida: 2025 Medians and How to Check Medicaid
Key takeaways
- CareScout 2025 Florida median assisted living community cost: $5,610/month ($67,320/year). Survey collected July–November 2025. Local prices vary.[1][2]
- National CareScout AL median the same year: $6,200/month.[1][2]
- Medicare does not pay for most custodial assisted living.[3]
- Florida’s path for Medicaid long-term care in the community (including settings that may include assisted living supports) runs through Statewide Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care (SMMC LTC)—financial eligibility via DCF, medical eligibility via CARES, often after an ADRC / waitlist process.[4]

Memory care: CareScout’s 2025 tables we opened do not list a Florida memory-care median. Ask each community for a written all-in quote.

What Medicare will and won’t do in Florida
Same national rule: Medicare.gov marks most long-term custodial care Not Covered—including non-medical care in an assisted living facility. You pay those costs unless Medicaid, private insurance, or other programs apply.[3]

Florida Medicaid / SMMC LTC — how to start looking (not a yes/no)
AHCA explains that Florida residents seeking Medicaid help for nursing facility or community-based long-term care must meet both financial and medical eligibility:[4]
- ADRC / waitlist pathway: Aging and Disability Resource Centers manage interest in SMMC LTC; after waitlist release, ADRC may send Form 5000-3008 for a Florida licensed clinician to complete.[4]
- Financial eligibility: Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) processes Medicaid waiver financial eligibility. AHCA points applicants to DCF Public Benefits & Services; AHCA lists DCF at 1-866-762-2237 for Medicaid information.[4]
- Medical eligibility: CARES (Department of Elder Affairs) performs an in-person level-of-care assessment after Form 3008 is returned.[4]
- Plan selection: If both are met, AHCA sends a welcome packet about selecting an SMMC plan.[4]
DCF notes that for long-term care in a nursing home or community setting, applicants should mark HCBS/Waivers or Nursing Home on the ACCESS application, and that HCBS/Waiver programs can include in-home or assisted living services that help prevent institutionalization.[5] Exact covered services and wait times depend on the program and capacity—confirm with DCF/AHCA/ADRC.
ACL reminder: some states cover assisted living under Medicaid; others do not; Medicaid generally does not pay rent/utilities/food.[6]

Practical checklist for Florida families
- Get two written AL/memory care quotes near the preferred county.
- Ask each facility: Do you accept SMMC LTC / Medicaid residents? What does Medicaid cover vs what you still pay for room and board?
- Call the local ADRC about the LTC waitlist (via Eldercare Locator).
- Review Medicaid eligibility for federal concepts (look-back, spousal rules)—then confirm Florida numbers with DCF.
- If exploring private LTC insurance, use LTC insurance and costs—no sales here.

FAQ
Is Florida cheaper than the national average for assisted living?
CareScout’s 2025 Florida median ($5,610/mo) is below the national median ($6,200/mo).[1][2] Coastal and metro facilities can still exceed the state median.
Does Florida Medicaid automatically pay for memory care?
No automatic entitlement. Memory care is a care setting; payment depends on Medicaid eligibility, waiver/plan rules, and whether the facility participates. Ask AHCA/DCF/ADRC and the facility—not this page.
